Why Your Successful-Looking Business is Draining the Life Out of You
When a Business Looks Successful but Feels Miserable to Run
When Shelly Oswald started her fourth business, a local farm, she found herself in a difficult position. Perhaps you can relate.
From the outside, her business looked like it was working just fine.
✅Revenue was coming in. ✅Customers were buying. ✅Shelly was busy. ✅There was always something happening.
But as Shelly was starting to realize, that does not always mean the business is healthy.
And it definitely does not mean the owner is living the life they dreamed of when they started their business.
That was the reality Shelly found herself facing, with a business that had slowly become heavier, more stressful, and less aligned with the reason she started it in the first place.
When Survival Mode Overshadows Your Mission
Shelly did not start her farm just to sell whatever random product would move. She had a deeper vision for her business. She wanted to be known for exceptional farm-to-fork heritage chicken and grass-fed beef.
She cared about the quality of the product, the integrity of the process and sustainable practices.
But startup pressure has a way of forcing hard choices.
Like so many owners trying to make payroll, cover expenses, and keep the lights on, Shelly began making decisions based on what would bring in cash the fastest.
Over time, those survival-based, revenue focused decisions pulled the business further and further away from what she had set out to build.
While revenue was coming in, the profits were disappointing. For Shelly, it didn’t feel like enough to justify the time and effort that the business was sucking up. She was giving a lot to the business and getting very little back.
Perhaps even more disheartening, most of Shelly’s customers did not really care about her mission of sustainability and high-quality meats, the reason why she had started the farm in the first place.
It seemed the harder she worked, the further the business drifted from its mission, and the less control she had over her time and her life. (Sound familiar?)
Ironically the cheeses that she bought and resold to round out her product line for “easy money” unintentionally became her core products, and those products became increasingly commoditized. Price pressure kept building and her margins narrowed.
In one especially frustrating twist, Shelly became known as “the cheese lady” at the farmer’s markets instead of the farm with the amazing chicken and beef.
The hidden business stress that nobody sees
By that point Shelly was starting to feel like her business was draining the life out of her!
She had:
❌ No outside life.
❌ No free time.
❌ No fun money.
❌ No real margin.
She felt lots of stress all the time.
Even more painful, Shelly was an experienced business owner. She knew what it felt like to run a business she enjoyed.
She knew what it felt like when the right business had momentum and ease. She had a degree in accounting and knew her numbers.
She was not guessing.
She was not careless.
And she was certainly not incapable.
And yet, this business was crushing her. Why?
It’s easy for a business owner to assume that if they are overwhelmed, struggling, or working too hard for too little return, the problem must be them.
Here’s the good news: it’s not you!
Too often, the problem is complexity.
Finding the answer
Shelly knew that something had to change, and she started searching for an answer.
That search led her to Mike Michalowicz and his books Profit First and The Pumpkin Plan.
Profit First was a revelation! It provided a simple, more visual way to manage cash flow and ensure profitability using your natural tendencies.
Profit First made a huge difference and brought a lot of financial clarity.
But it still was not enough.
💡 The realization that changed everything
Then Shelly read The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field and the light bulb went off for her. This was the answer to her overly complicated business!
When Shelly realized that The Pumpkin Plan was the key to growing a profitable business that does not suck the life out of you, she decided to dive in completely and get certified as a Pumpkin Plan Strategist. She wanted to help other founders like herself to stop struggling and start thriving.
That’s when things really started to shift.
Today, Shelly works with solopreneurs and founders like herself who have a vision and a passion for growing a business that is aligned with their values and life goals.
But the real value for Shelly was not just in the Pumpkin Plan Strategist credential. It was in the clarity she gained from the Pumpkin Plan process and the support she continues to receive from the Pumpkin Plan team.
Shelly’s revelation was something many business owners don’t see:
Complexity is the enemy of freedom
If you want a business that supports your life, complexity will fight you every step of the way.
Complexity not only made the business harder for her to run. It made the business more confusing for her best customers too.
Lighter AND More Profitable
The real changes began when, following the Sweet Spot method from The Pumpkin Plan, Shelly stopped trying to fix the business by adding more and started simplifying instead.
She began to see that clarity, intention, boundaries, systemization, simplicity, and alignment are not luxuries. They are the real building blocks of a profitable business that creates freedom.
The process she went through was not flashy, but it was powerful. Shelly made the shift from:
✅ Too many products to surgical weeding.
✅ Chasing every customer to intentional nurturing of the customers who are aligned with her mission.
✅ Constant busyness to letting go of the things that only create noise, distraction, and misalignment.
✅ Chasing every opportunity to focus on what matters most and building around that.
When Shelly made these shifts, growth and profitability started to show up in abundance!
The business became lighter, the confusion lifted, and Shelly got control of her life back.
Why Shelly’s story matters
Shelly’s story is important because so many business owners are living some version of it right now.
From the outside, things may look fine.
But behind the scenes, the owner is exhausted.
Profit is thinner than it should be, if it exists at all.
And the whole thing feels far more cumbersome than success is supposed to feel.
Shelly learned a valuable lesson – less is more!
And that is why Shelly’s story resonates so deeply with the work we do at Pumpkin Plan Your Biz.
Because a good business does not just produce revenue.
It aligns with your mission, resonates with your customers, rewards your effort with healthy profits, and supports your life instead of consuming it.
That is the kind of business worth building.
