Most business coaches and consultants serve a variety of clients. They pride themselves on having varied experience. They love to help people, and they figure the more different types of businesses they work with, the more opportunities they have to make a difference. The problem with this approach is that they look just like everyone else. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you must become an expert in a niche.
Your business niche can be defined by a specific industry that you focus on, a demographic group that you serve, a psychographic characteristic that defines your target market, a solution you provide to a specific problem, and/or any world where you concentrate all your efforts. Your niche is the group you and your business are designed to serve.
So how do you know what niche you should be serving? Who should be your community? Here are three simple questions to point you in the right direction:
1. Past Thrills – Look back at your life and think about times when you helped others and felt thrilled about it. When helping someone else gives you joy, and that joy is more important than anything else, you are serving others in a way that connects with your passion and purpose. Who were you helping? Do they constitute a niche market for you? What were you helping them with, and do you currently incorporate that into your services? If not, you should!
2. One Association. One Keynote – If you were invited to do one keynote speech for one association, who would you choose to speak to and what would you speak about? Those people are in your niche. The topic you chose for your speech serves that niche.
3. Under Served. Never Served – What group of people are under served or ignored (never served)? Does the fact they are under served or never served upset you? Does it anger you? Does it motivate you to finally stand up, take action and care for them? If so, that group is your niche! They are starving for you, and your opportunity to become THE provider to that niche is huge.
Take the time to answer one or more of these questions, and you will be on your way to dominating a niche that fulfills your passion and purpose.
